A new four-issue series set after the 2004 cult movie will originate from IDW in September.

Albeit comic books offer experience featuring a wide range of legends, one thing has been absent for quite a while: a saint with nunchuck, bowhunting and PC hacking abilities. This fall, that is going to change, with IDW Publishing propelling a Napoleon Dynamite comic book series.

Set soon after the hit 2004 film, the four-issue series sees Pedro’s reign as student body president threatened when he’s blamed for having cheated in the election, pushing Napoleon and Deb to need to reveal reality to demonstrate Pedro’s name before it’s past the point of no return.

Composing the new series are Carlos Guzman-Verdugo and Alejandro Verdugo, co-makers of the indie comic Time Cheetah, with Adventure Time veteran Jorge Monlongo giving art. The first issue highlights cover art by Sara Richard, just as variant covers featuring a photo from the original movie, and artwork from Monlongo.

“Napoleon Dynamite is a pop-culture staple, a coming-of-age cult classic that spoke to the weirdo in all of us. It’s an honor to have the chance to expand on the lives of Napoleon, Deb, and Pedro — characters that continue to resonate to this day. I still see people wearing ‘Vote for Pedro’ t-shirts!” Verdugo said in a statement about the series.

Included Guzman-Verdugo, “With this new story, we’re focusing on matching the movie’s unique tone, finding that perfect blend of oddball comedy and charming slice-of-life drama. It’s certainly been a challenge but one we’re sure will pay off for longtime fans.”

The series will launch in September.
