For the first time in a long time, Pixar appears to be following rather than setting trends with the announcement of its upcoming film.

Pixar’s 2027 feature, Gatto, was been revealed at the Annecy International Animation feature Festival. Following a black cat named Nero, who “after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city… begins to question whether he’s lived the right life,” the film, which was directed Italian Luca helmer Enrico Casarosa, is set in Venice, Italy. Due to a local feline crime lord, Nero is stuck in a difficult situation and must make a very surprising acquaintance who could ultimately help him discover his purpose—that is, if Venice defeats him first.

Since Pixar films are often excellent due to their lengthy production times, it is highly probable that Gatto was in development well before November of last year. However, that’s when the French animated picture Flow came out, and it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature after conquering hearts all around the world.

However, Pixar has a lot of things planned before 2027. It will release Elio, the long-awaited tale of a little child embarking on an otherworldly journey, next week. Hoppers, a movie about people being able to communicate and engage with animals, will come out in March 2026. Toy Story 5 will follow in June 2026, and it will include Buzz, Woody, and the gang interacting with technology.
