Universal Pictures has formally approved a sequel to the Christmas action film Violent Night, which was produced by 87North. The sequel, which promises to deliver more of the gory, darkly funny thrills that made the first a fan favorite, is expected to see David Harbour reprise his role as a grumpy Santa with a vengeance.

On December 4, 2026, Violent Night 2 will be released in theaters by 87North and Universal.

Storyline

Written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller and directed by Tommy Wirkola, the first film depicts an enraged Santa (David Harbour from Stranger Things) as he fights mercenaries who have taken an affluent family captive in their home. Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Hassell, and John Leguizamo were all featured in the original film. Santa dons his outfit once more in the follow-up. Wirkola returns to direct the follow-up, which was written by Casey and Miller.

Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the creators of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, wrote the screenplay, which Tommy Wirkola directed. Although the director, writer, and plot are yet unknown, 87North creators Kelly McCormick and David Leitch will produce the sequel to Harbour.

“Violent Night,” which was released in December 2022, starring David Harbour as a grumpy Santa Claus who, while delivering gifts on his yearly rounds, finds a home where a family is being held captive by mercenaries and decides to take matters into his own hands in order to save them. Despite having a $20 million budget, the movie made $76 million at the box office worldwide.
