The theatrical release of Blue Moon, a biographical drama based on the life of famed Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, has been formally announced by Sony Pictures Classics. The film will present a poignant portrayal of Hart’s life and legacy to viewers in a few places before going on to theaters around the country.

Star-Studded Cast

The 75th Berlin International Film Festival hosted the world premiere of Blue Moon, which starred Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke in his ninth collaboration with Linklater, along with Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott. The film received positive reviews and won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Andrew Scott.

Plot

The movie profiles the final days of Lorenz Hart, part of the hit songwriting team Rodgers & Hart, and is set primarily in Sardi’s Restaurant on March 31, 1943, the opening night of Oklahoma!, Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II as Hart’s replacement.

Besides the 1934 hit ballad “Blue Moon” from which the movie is titled, Rodgers and Hart directed musicals including Babes in Arms and Pal Joey. The Sound of Music, The King and I, and South Pacific were among the hits that Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to write.

Richard Linklater Ambitious Upcoming Project

Richard Linklater is also working on a movie adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim in addition to this project. The cast, which consists of Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, and Ben Platt, is being filmed every two years for a total of 20 films. The Broadway revival in 2023 took home four Tony Awards.
