The 2024 Toyota GR86 gets a special edition and a new performance package for the next model year.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the car that served as the basis for the GR86, a Trueno Edition will be added to the lineup of sports coupes in 2024. This was the sportiest version of the rear-wheel-drive Toyota AE86 platform, and it was sold from 1984 to 1987 in Japan as the Sprinter Trueno and in the United States as the Corolla Sport GT-S.

The AE86 was prized by enthusiasts for its nimble handling, tunable engines, and affordability, even though it was technically an economy car and not a sports car. Through the manga and anime “Initial D,” the AE86 Sprinter Trueno also helped spread drifting, hence the “86” in GR86.

The Trueno Edition, which is based on the GR86 Premium grade, takes the AE86 references to the next level by replicating the 1980s car’s signature two-tone appearance with a black hood, black door handles, mirror caps, side graphics, and a black spoiler against white or red paint. 18-inch wheels in black metallic are also included in the special edition.

Additionally, the Trueno Edition features an eight-speaker audio system, red stitching on the shifter boot and steering wheel, and suede seats with red leather trim.

Brembo brakes with four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers are included in a new performance package that is standard on the Trueno Edition and available as an option on other 2024 GR86 models. It can also be added to any GR86 with 18-inch wheels from 2022 or 2023.

Natural aspirated 2.4-liter flat-4 engine with 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque remains the only one available. A 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission transfers that power to the rear wheels. Toyota claims that the manual model takes 6.1 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the automatic model takes 6.6 seconds. The standard differential is a Torsen limited-slip.

Both the automatic and the manual transmissions now offer driver-assist features. Automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking are on the list. The GR86 is equipped with Subaru’s camera-based safety suite because it is paired with the Subaru BRZ.

Similar to the 2023 Special Edition model, production of the 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition will be limited to 860 units for the U.S. market, with deliveries beginning this winter. At a later time, the prices for all 2024 GR86 models will be made public.
