In 2023, a number of high-profile Bollywood films were unable to break even. However, the same year, record-breaking blockbusters such as Jawan, Pathaan, and Gadar 2 brought the Indian film industry back from its post-Covid slump. Ten of the year’s biggest box office busts are listed below.

Advipurush

Odipurush, a mythological drama starring Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, and Kriti Sanon, was one of the biggest box office busters of the year despite a ton of pre-release buzz. Even though the movie brought in about Rs 390 crore worldwide, the majority of that money was made in its first weekend of release; after that, sales started to decline. An estimated Rs 700 crore was spent on the film’s production.

Jaan Kisi Ki Bhai Kisi Ka Kisi

With a global gross of just Rs 182 crore, Salman Khan’s Eid release Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan did not achieve much success. The film, which was directed by Farhad Samji and starred Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Gill, Venkatesh Daggubati, Palak Tiwari, and Raghav Juyal, found it difficult to connect with viewers.

Take a selfie

Selfiee, starring Emraan Hashmi and Akshay Kumar, did poorly at the box office, grossing just Rs 23 crore worldwide. Even with its popular dance sequences, the Hindi version of the Malayalam movie Driving Licence, directed by Raj Mehta, was unable to entice viewers to the theaters.

The Raniganj Mission

The box office performance of Parineeti Chopra’s role in Akshay Kumar’s survival drama Mission Raniganj was subpar. Only Rs 45 crore could be made globally for the rescue drama directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, which was based on the 1989 collapse of the Raniganj Coalfields.

Shazda

Shehzada, the Hindi adaptation of Telugu hit film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, which marked Kartik Aaryan’s production debut, was unable to surpass the Rs 50-crore milestone worldwide. Kartik returned to playing the quirky yet endearing roles that have made him famous with Rohit Dhawan’s Shahzada, following a string of somber roles. Despite its comedy drama’s attempt to draw audiences to theaters, it ended its box office run with a worldwide gross of Rs 47.43 crore.

Ganapath: Tale of a Born Hero

The goal of Ganapath: A Hero is Born, directed by Vikas Bahl, was to be an intense post-apocalyptic film. But despite getting mixed reviews and failing to make an impression on viewers, the Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon, and Amitabh Bachchan film fell short of expectations. Despite being released around Dussehra, it ultimately brought in a total of Rs 35.13 crore worldwide.

Aholaa

Another big-budget movie with a lackluster box office reception was Bholaa, starring Ajay Devgn. Replicating the success of the Tamil film Kaithi, Ajay Devgn’s directing effort fell short of expectations, grossing a mere Rs 111.64 crore globally.

The War Against Vaccines

Director Vivek Agnihotri promised to tell the story of the development of India’s COVID-19 vaccine in The Vaccine War, a compelling portrayal of the COVID-19 era, following the success of The Kashmir Files. But despite starring Nana Patekar, Anupam Kher, Raima Sen, Sapthami Gowda, Pallavi Joshi, and Paritosh Sand, the scientific drama bombed at the box office, earning a whopping Rs 9.47 crore in total revenue worldwide.

In Tejas

With her 2023 release Tejas, Kangana Ranaut’s run of bad box office results continued. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the war drama directed by Sarvesh Mewara only made Rs 4.25 crore.

The Ladykiller

The Ladykiller, an action thriller directed by Ajay Bahl, was dogged by controversy from the moment it was released. With Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, the movie had a very restricted theatrical run in a few Indian cities. The film’s opening day receipts were a pitiful Rs 38,000, and it ended its theatrical run with a pitiful lifetime earning of just Rs 1 lakh.
