The 2025 Emmy nominations mark a milestone year, celebrating fresh faces, historic records, and increased representation. Legendary director Martin Scorsese (The Studio), Harrison Ford (Shrinking), Adam Brody and Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This), and Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) all earned their first-ever Emmy nods. In a historic moment, Owen Cooper (Adolescence) became the youngest nominee in his category, while Kathy Bates (Matlock) was recognized as the oldest.

With their nod, Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) has created history for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, a power couple in the music industry, are competing for an Emmy this year.

Top Nominated Shows

With 27 nominations, Severance is in the lead of the competition. The White Lotus and The Studio are tied for 23 nominations each, only behind The Penguin, which received 24.

Event Details

On Sunday, September 14, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, CBS will broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for the 77th Emmy Awards, which will be hosted by Nate Bargatze.

Bella Ramsey Sets Emmy Record

16 Emmy nominations were garnered by The Last of Us season 2, while Bella Ramsey noteworthyly received their second Emmy nomination. Ramsey, however, became the first openly nonbinary performer to receive multiple Emmy nominations, making their second nomination historic. Their portrayal of Ellie Williams in the drama actress category earned them recognition.

Noah Wyle Scores First Emmy Nomination in 26 Years

Noah Wyle’s performance on The Pitt earned him a nomination for outstanding drama actor on Tuesday. Although it was his first Emmy nomination in a staggering 26 years, this was not his first nomination as an actor. For his work on ER, Wyle got five Emmy nods between 1995 and 1999, but it took him just over 20 years to get another nomination.

Pedro Pascal Scores Best Drama Actor Emmy Nod Despite Minimal Screen Time

Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller was fired in episode two of season two of The Last of Us, which is one of the most startling TV deaths (for those who haven’t played the video game from which the show was derived). Despite only making two more appearances (through flashbacks) this season, the Fantastic Four: First Steps star received a nomination for outstanding drama actor.

When compared to fellow contenders Adam Scott, Gary Oldman, Noah Wyle, and Sterling K. Brown, Pascal undoubtedly got the least amount of screen time. But this isn’t the first time the Academy has nominated someone who only starred in a few episodes in a lead acting category. Recall that Brian Cox was nominated for Best Dramatic Actor in 2023 for the film Succession. Even though Cox and Pascal only appeared in three episodes of the Emmy-winning juggernaut, their brief but significant on-screen roles helped them both receive recognition.

Greetings to the New Nominees

This year, several talented people have been nominated for their first Emmys. The Penguin’s Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti; Adolescence’s Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham; Presumed Innocent’s Jake Gyllenhaal; Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’s Cooper Koch, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny; Nobody Wants This’s Adam Brody and Kristen Bell; Die Hart: Hart to Kill’s J.K. Simmons; Bad Thoughts’ Tom Segura; and The White Lotus’s Jason Isaacs and Scott Glenn.

The oldest nominee for best drama actress is Kathy Bates.

In Hollywood, Kathy Bates is creating history. Bates, who played Madeline “Matty” Matlock in the legal drama Matlock, received a nomination in the best drama actress category at the age of 77. Despite having already won two Emmys—one for her role as Madame Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven and another for her role as a guest star on Two and a Half Men—this year’s nomination makes her the oldest drama actress nominee in history. She faces Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us, Britt Lower from Severance, Sharon Horgan from the Bad Sisters, and Keri Russell from The Diplomat.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé Face Off Against One Another

The Knowles-Carter family lives in a divided home. A unique accomplishment for a husband and wife is that Beyoncé and her husband Shawn Carter, often known as Jay-Z, are both nominated in the outstanding variety special (live) category. For her Beyoncé Bowl halftime performance during the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, the Cowboy Carter singer was nominated. Jay-Z, who has won two primetime Emmys, is an executive producer for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. But this would be Beyoncé’s first time winning the prize.

The Bear and the Studio Share the Most Noms for a Comedy Series

With 23 nominations last year, The Bear was the show with the most nominations for a comedy series in a single awards year, but this year it was matched. The Bear’s record was tied by Seth Rogen’s The Studio, which received 23 nominations. Among the Studio’s nominations were Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara for best supporting actress in a comedy series, Rogen for best actor in a comedy series, and the Studio for best comedy series. Due to nominations for their roles in The Studio, Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Scorsese almost dominated the best guest actor in a comedy series category. The second nominee in the category was Jon Bernthal of the Bears.

Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese Win First Acting Oscars

Even while Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese are most known for their Oscar-winning work as filmmakers, they are now also acknowledged for their acting. For their roles in The Studio, the two directors each received their first acting nominations for best guest actor in a comedy series. In addition to being the director of the documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man, Howard has already received Emmys for his work as an executive producer on Arrested Development and Curious George. Scorsese previously received an Emmy for directing an episode of Boardwalk Empire and George Harrison: Living in the Material World.

Once more, SNL extends its Emmy record

By maintaining its lead for the most nominations ever for a program, Saturday Night Live once again demonstrated its supremacy at the Emmys. Between its regular program and annual SNL50 specials, the long-running sketch comedy series has gotten 372 nominations to far, including the 31 it received this year.

Catherine O’Hara and Julianne Nicholson See Two

Both Catherine O’Hara and Julianne Nicholson were nominated for two Emmys this year for different projects. Nicholson received nominations for both best supporting actress in a drama series (Paradise) and best actress in a comedy series (Hacks). O’Hara received nominations for both best supporting actress in a comedy series for The Studio and best guest actress in a drama series for The Last of Us.

Teenage Icon Owen Cooper Creates History Through Nomination

The youngest candidate in the history of his category, best supporting actor in a limited/anthology series or TV film, was 15-year-old actor Owen Cooper, who appeared in the popular show Adolescence. Cooper would also become the youngest male acting Emmy winner in history if he prevails.
