Black Hills Soul is an Independent Recording Artist based in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  They are the joining of 4 songwriters who have come together to create exciting new music that they would describe as “New Rock for Old Souls of All Ages”. Their debut album “Where It All Begins” has landed. We caught up with the charting band to ask a few questions.

How did you come by your band name?

BHS:  Todd came up with the name. Todd grew up inspired by great soulful singers like Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.  We all sing, but he is the genuine soul singer in the group.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

BHS: I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember, but my love for the craft of songwriting and the desire to have a career in music probably started for me at around the age of 18. That’s when I wrote my first song.  Todd’s love and desire to pursue music came much earlier, from the time he first heard Ray Charles when he was in the 3rd grade.  All four of us, have wanted this for the majority of our lives.

How does it feel to be a Billboard charting band?  It must have taken a long time to get here.

BHS:  It feels surreal. We are excited about our debut album and are glad it is getting this attention. 🙂  This band is fairly new. We joined together to start writing together around the time that Covid hit a few years ago. But the journeys that each of us have taken to get to the formation of this group have been very long.

To what or to whom do you all accredit your sense of music to?

BHS: For us, there really isn’t one person or one thing.  It is the many musicians and friends over the years that we’ve had the good fortune to play music with. That’s who we’ve learned from. That’s who I’m inspired by.

Tell us about your album – how did you come up with the concept?

BHS:  It started out as an idea to make a documentary about 4 relatively unknown songwriters coming together to collaborate on an album. But our knowledge and abilities as filmmakers was simply not as good as our knowledge and ability to make and perform music. We began to love the chemistry between the four of us as writers and the songs we were creating. The album has kind of a 70’s rock feel.  It just turned out that way.   It’s new rock music for old souls of all ages.

What are your plans for the near future?

BHS:  We have written a lot of new songs and can’t wait to get back to the studio to record the next album.  For right now, though, we are performing and doing the best we can to get this debut album as much exposure to the world of music fans as we can.

What suggestions do you have for other bands like yourself?

BHS:  Believe in yourself, believe in your music, and don’t be afraid to take risks along the way.

We are looking forward to more releases from Black Hills Soul and thoroughly enjoyed this album. Give it a listen here!
